Kay de Wolf and Scott Smulders Kick off Dutch Open 85cc Season With Podium Spots Kay de Wolf and Scott Smulders of the Beursfoon KTM team both finished on the podium at the season opener of the open Dutch 85cc Championship at Gemert. Both riders rode strongly, with Kay claiming second overall, and Scott third.
After some strong preparation, the team was looking forward to the event. Due to the numerous entries, qualifying was split into two groups. The track was still frozen early in the morning, and during qualifying, Scott claimed fourth spot in his group and Kay seventh. The two youngsters were keen to get going with the season’s racing, but Kay’s first race immediately brought problems with it. Going down the start straight, he noticed that he had no rear brakes, which wass problematic on the slippery, icy circuit. Despite this, he rode smoothly to finish fourth. Scott was third initially, and soon moved to second. He kept the pressure on race leader Liam Everts, but could not make the pass and finished second. The two teammates both grabbed good starts in the second race, and Kay soon claimed the lead. Once in the front, he was not going to yield again, and won the race, Scott tried all he could to pass Everts for second place, but eventually had to settle for third.
With Kay second – and Scott third overall for the day, it was a good outing for the team’s podium candidates. Sem Beijer played a strong role in flying the team flag as well. With fifteenth overall, he made his first mark towards qualifying for the Dutch Masters of Motocross series. The Open Dutch Championship series moves to Boekel for the next round this coming weekend.
