The Beursfoon KTM motocross team came home with two podium places from the first round of the European Championship motocross elimination rounds with two podium spots. Ivano van Erp won one heat and finished third overall in the EMX65 class, and Kay de Wolf finished third in the EMX85 class, with Scott Smulders coming in 12th place.
After the first rounds of the Open Dutch Championships and the Dutch masters of Motocross opener, the team set off for Denmark for the first round of the European Championships. The event at Naestveld is one of the selection events which will determine the riders that will go to the series final at Loket in the Czech Republic.
In a strong field of 32 riders in the 65cc class, Ivano Van Erp posted the fastest time in the free training, followed by second in qualifying. He won the qualifying heat on his Hannamax KTM, showing that he meant business. In the first heat, he had a great start, and took the early lead. He kept a cool head, and claimed the chequered flag first.
A lesser start in the second heat forced Ivano into a comeback ride. He claimed a lot of spots, but alas could get no higher than 8th. This was still good enough for third overall on the day.
The EMX 85 class was fully stacked, with an entry of 62 riders. Scott Smulders only posted the 12th time during free training on a muddy track, but during qualifying, he improved to fourth. In an ever-improving line, he rode the wheels off his bike in the qualifying race to finish third.
Scott maintained a good tempo during the first race on Sunday, and finished 11th. Despite a lesser start in the second heat, he again rode consistently to finish well inside the points in 15th position. This was good enough for 12th overall on the day.
Kay de Wolf posted the second fastest time in free training in his group. He claimed the pole time during qualifying. He fluffed the start in the qualifying heat, and had to come back from 14th position. he showed good speed in working his way to third.
Kay was determined to get good starts in the races, and in the first heat, he did exactly that. He rode cleverly to finish fourth. Another good start in the second heat again handed him a good platform, and again he finished fourth, just behind his good friend Rasmus Pedersen. This yielded him third overall for the day, and third in the championship standings.
