Kay de Wolf of the Beursfoon KTM team won both heats of the 85cc class at the traditional season-opening winter motocross at Groesbeek. That proved that he would be in top form when the Open Dutch Championships kicks off at the beginning of March.
In the first heat, Kay had a rocket start and took the lead immediately. He quickly built up a gap to the second placed man, Scott Smulders. As the race wore on, De Wolf managed his lead, and allowed Smulders to get closer, but never close enough to challenge for the win. He eventually won the race with a 2 second margin.
In the second heat, Kay claimed yet an other holeshot. On a track that had become very heavy for the small 85cc bikes, concentration was needed, and Kay again built up an early lead. Again he kept things exciting but managing his lead, and the spectators were treated to an exciting battle between Kay and Ryan de Beer. Kay eventually claimed the win, and also the overall for the day.
